Live immediately

“Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune’s control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.”

– Seneca

It’s easy to look back and think “I did nothing this year!”, but that’s incredibly unlikely. All of us have something to show for the year, although we might not be able to see it clearly. Chances are, we’ve touched somebody’s life and made a difference in ways we’re not aware of.

The problem with looking back is that we’re spending time on something we can’t change. Instead of focusing on the past, focus on the present. The present will shape our future and it’s the only thing we have (trite, but true).

So while it’s great to set goals, only the steps we take in the present will make them likely or not to be achieved. So we shouldn’t be putting off the things we want to do — we should be doing them now. Telling our friends and family we love them. Spending time with people who make us feel good. Doing the activities we enjoy, and those that improve our quality of life. Going for a walk. Drinking some water.

Don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future: live immediately.
